Promoting artisans’ role in cultural preservation in Kon Tum

Over the past time, Sa Thay district, the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, has promulgated resolutions and invested more to preserve ethnic traditional cultural values.

The district population is more than 57% ethnic minority people, including Gia Rai, Se Dang, Ro Mam, Ba Na and others, creating a diversified culture community with special traditional values.

In order to well perform the task of preserving the national cultural identity, apart from the promulgation of resolutions, Sa Thay district has attached great importance to promoting the role of outstanding artisans in the district and village elders, to encourage young people to preserve national cultural identities.

Since 2010, the district has organized eight training courses on gong performances and folk singing, with the participation of nearly 200 artisans and over 1,000 learners.

So far, it has preserved nearly 450 sets of gongs. Some 14 artisans received the title “outstanding artisan”, while all 39 ethnic villages have gong troupes.

In the upcoming time, the mountain border district will promulgate a project on the preservation and promotion of culture in ethnic-inhabited areas in association with tourism development. Each year, VND150 million is allocated for these activities.
