The meeting had the presence of some 80 delegates from 21 APEC economies, APEC Secretariat, WTTC, OECD, IATA, AICST, PATA, etc.
In the welcoming speech, Dr. Ha Van Sieu said the meeting was a platform for delegates to discuss on the preparation for the High-Level Policy Roundtable on Sustainable Tourism due in June 2017, which will set the guideline for tourism to cope with climate change and tourism development for socio-economic growth.
He informed that Viet Nam received over 10 million tourist arrivals for the first time in 2016, 62 domestic trippers, tourism receipt of over USD 18 billion. Notably, tourists from APEC economies reached 8.1 million arrivals, accounting for 81% of total tourists to Viet Nam. He believed the enhanced tourism cooperation in APEC would help Viet Nam tourism to develop into a key economic sector of the country and also tighten the relationship between Viet Nam and APEC members.
As scheduled, the delegates will revise the outcomes of the tourism working group in 2016 and discuss the action plan for 2017. They will also discuss APEC’s initiatives including: Travel Facilitation Initiative, APEC Services Competitiveness Roadmap, Remote Areas for Sustainable Growth in the APEC Region Initiative; such projects as Developing Traveler-Friendly Airports to Improve the Passenger Experience in the APEC Region; Developing the Tourism Workforce of the Future through Labour and Skills Development, Certification and Mobility in the APEC Region; APEC Economic Study on Impact of Cruise Tourism, etc.
